Frame of Mind : Open Titles

Bart Weiss, the director of the Video Association of Dallas, came to Sai Selvarajan and I with the challenge of creating the title open for his TV Show “Frame of Mind” on PBS. It features experimental and unusual artistic and documentary short films. I was dead set on doing something handmade to contrast with our digital world. The final idea was conceived by Sai at Lucky Post. I shot the footage as I worked in my Oak Cliff studio. It consisted of a series of time laps shots as I drew and created the art installations that become the opening titles.

Direct Energy : Moving Done Easy Interview Spot

The agency TracyLocke asked us to create a 60sec spot that fit the interview style of Hot On Homes. The national Direct Energy TV and Print campaign Moving Made Easy had great GFX that I animated for this piece. Its always wonderful to work with an agency that does great work.

Drees 85th

Working with The Plum Tree Group, an agency focused on e-marketing, wrote the spot and asked us to produce it. Shot on the Red, we had just under four hours with the president of The Drees Company. A challenging shoot but successful. I directed and planned the shoot with Chris Lenardon as cinematographer.

I also animated the graphics. They have a great print campaign with the thick lines, bright colors and open space for the text. Really liked it and could easily visualize how I could bring it to life. Its definitely a big step up from your basic corporate message, and David Drees has a natural ease that translated well to the screen.

Nike Morning : Spec

Shot on 16mm, this was a film throwback project when I found a roll of Kodak daylight in the Bottom of my closet. Shot at 72fps and over exposed it to give it a grainy, spotlight look.

A Quiet Crisis

A documentary on the Texas nursing shortage and how nurses travel to Austin once a year to inform the Texas Legislature about heathcare issues.

This was an early project I directed. My main contribution was the idea of the nurses telling us what inspired them to become a nurse. The most obvious set up for the importance of nurses would be crying babies and the infirm. But that was too cliche for this story about the nurses taking on the state capital. I wanted to set up why nurses are important while making a connection to each interviewee. It’s the difference between explaining an issue and connecting an audience to individuals who open up to the camera.

This was a successful recruitment tool and educational piece for the Texas Nurses Association. It took some strong finagling from our producer Chris Simpson to convince them to triple the budget they had in mind but it landed the project with a 2009 Telly Award.

Beatles 7

“When orphan Charlie discovers the lost Beatles tapes, he must overcome his feelings of abandonment to keep them safe.” That was the log-line to Blackleaderfilms’ first feature length script written by my partner Sai Salvarajan and myself.

I directed this mock trailer to generate interest in the project as we shopped it around Hollywood back in the early 2000s.

My favorite part of the script was his imagined conversations with Ringo Starr, whom he discovers is his father.
